People and Their Obsession With the Ellipsis ( ... ) While Texting

Okay! We just HAD to do a post about this. We’ve seen a lot, we mean A LOT, of people use the ellipsis (a.k.a. the three dots or how much ever dots they want. Also a.k.a. “……….”) while texting and man, those have become WAAAAAY to annoying. It’s so much annoying that we didn’t even do our intro for this post! Yeah, and we do that for EVERY SINGLE post (Very important note: READ THE DISCLAIMER THAT IS PRESENT AT THE END OF THIS POST)

Now, let’s get down to business. In this post we’ll be telling y’all what the ellipsis means - actually means -  in informal writing (we won’t get into the formal meaning), the inner emotion of it and when and where you’re supposed to use it (What are you? The grammar police? Well, no we just want people to know the informal meaning of this. *shrugs*). People reeeeaaaally need to know this.

‘Kay, what is the informal meaning?

So when you use it in informal writing like text messages or even blog posts; it demonstrates a pause in text. Here, we’ll give you examples.

- I was thinking … maybe we should just ask for help

- She wasn’t angry… she was just tired

And what do these pauses mean/why do they pause?

It’s usually used to indicate an emotion, especially in recent times. Here are all the emotions that could’ve possibly been indicated:

1. The dramatic pause – I don’t think it’ll go away… ever.

2. The suspenseful pause – She opened the door into the dark hallway… and found… GOLD!

3. The awkward pause – So… umm... this is awkward…

4. The 'I’m-lying-and-I-low-key-want-you-to-know-that' pause – 'Did you do that?!'  'No…'

5. The angry pause – its fine… (You tell its fine but you don't mean it)

Now when and where do I use it?

Use it if you find yourself in any of the above situations or if you want to indicate a pause in the text. Do NOT use it just because. Because if you do, the other person might take it in a different meaning. Like if you text “Hi….What’s up…” they might think that you’re texting this unwillingly. Like think about it. Imagine you’re pausing there when you’re actually talking. You’ll feel it, you’ll feel the emotion, the awkwardness too. That is exactly why you’re not supposed to use it just because. And NO, it’s NOT a trend to just use the ellipsis after every word.

So that’s all for this post guys! Also share this post to anyone who uses the ellipsis often without intending a pause in between texts. Don’t feel like you’ll offend them if you do. They all deserve to know what it means. Tysm for reading this! It means you were brave enough to accept your mistakes and learn from it! We did to! We’re seriously not the grammar police (well, we try our best not to be ;D),

P.S. Disclaimer: This post was not intended towards any particular person. This was just to kind of, in a way, raise awareness. And we’re NOT trying to offend ANY of you guys. And another thing, what we described here in this post is the INFORMAL meaning of the ellipsis, NOT THE FORMAL one.

    1. Hey! Thanks for the compliment!
Getting to the point, we came up with ours by brain storming and getting clear on what we'll be posting on our blog. So we wanted to post about teen life, and like about us basically. So we came up with Chaotic Dreamers because 'chaos' basically captures teen life and the word 'dreamers' describes us as we really dream BIG!

      So for your tips,
      - come up with a name that describes you or your blog or both (like ours).
      - search up blog name ideas on pinterest or google and you'll find some interesting word choices you can choose from.
      - get inspired by other blogs.

These are my top three tips for you!

Here are some ideas I came up with for you (You can use them if you want): My key to the world, Finding my way through, written in the stars, The Amirtha Edit (If Amirtha is your name), Words of wonder, Wonder, Just Fine, Hangin' tight, My side of the story.
